Portland Stage has gotten off to a running start into its 40th season. With Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom opening in a few weeks, the building is bustling with the Portland Stage staff and guest artists. Arriving just two weeks ago, the Intern Company is fresh to the fray. The ten of us make up about a third of the company’s boots on the ground and we jumped head first into Ma Rainey. We are an integral part of daily operations, and I have learned a great deal in my short number of days here.

As a directing and dramaturgy intern, I’ve spent most of my time in the literary office. Our department is currently creating the PlayNotes guide for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a publication that aims to give context and promote discussion about the play. We will…
